This is an intensive weekend workshop, which allowed artists, coders and technologists to collaborate, team up and develop prototypes of game / art projects. An exciting challenge at ‘Game City’ in Nottingham – home of the National Videogame Arcade.
The ART//GAMES//HACKATHON was an intensive weekend workshop, which allowed artists, coders and technologists to team up, collaborate and develop prototypes of game art projects. This exciting event took place at Game City in Nottingham – home of the National Videogame Arcade on 16th and 17th April 2016.
The ART // GAMES // HACKATHON is part of Europeana Space, a large EU-funded project, which examines the creative reuse of online content across a range of media and art forms. This is the sixth hackathon to be hosted by the project. Previous events have focussed on a variety of disciplines, including TV, dance, publishing, photography and museums. Videogames are a huge cultural and creative force currently breaking ground into traditional art practice – this event considers how innovative new art / game projects may cultivate new forms of participation.
During the workshop the jury looked at several aspects of each concept:

Bruno Martelli is half of artistic Duo Gibson/Martelli, who make live simulations using performance capture, computer-generated models and an array of technologies including Virtual Reality. Artworks of infinite duration are built within game engines where surround sound heightens the sense of immersion. They playfully address the position of the self in relation to technology, examining ideas of player, performer and visitor intertwining familiar tropes of video games and art traditions of figure & landscape.

Ian Gouldstone is a BAFTA winning artist and filmmaker, whose work incorporates games, animation and new media. He is a founder of the collective Pachinko Pictures. He graduated from Harvard University with a degree in mathematics before studying animation at the Royal College of Art and is now completing his MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths. His work explores the practical and theoretical implications of queer video game forms.

Alex Woolner has been involved in digital creativity for 20 years, the core of his practice is interactivity & user experience – he has worked across a range of digital media to achieve this – including a 10 year portfolio of work with young people. Alex has a PhD for his work developing interactive experiences for young people with autism. A former senior researcher at Coventry University under Professor Pam Kato he delivered a range of gaming projects within the field of digital culture. Alex Woolner is currently Creative Director at AdsReality producing gaming, virtual & augmented reality experiences. You can contact him @pandigital
Paul Callaghan is a creative producer, game developer, writer and teacher interested in the intersection of games with other cultural and creative practice. He has made digital & physical games, directed a festival, curated exhibitions, designed and run education programs and has written and spoken extensively about videogames and their place in the world. Currently he teaches in the Arts and Digital Industries School of the University of East London.
